A summer designed to strengthen the body, awaken the senses,
and support whole‑child development

Back to Nature is built around one simple truth: young children need rich, full‑body movement and sensory experiences to grow well. Summer offers the ideal window for this kind of developmental nourishment—long days, open space, and the freedom to move in ways that indoor environments rarely allow.

This program is intentionally crafted to support the physical, sensory, and cognitive foundations that children rely on throughout the school year.

Decades of research in child development, occupational therapy, and environmental psychology point to the same truth: children need daily, meaningful time outdoors to develop strong bodies, regulated nervous systems, and flexible thinking.

Key findings include:

  • Improved sensory integration - Occupational therapists emphasize that uneven ground, varied textures, climbing, digging, and balancing naturally strengthen the vestibular and proprioceptive systems—foundations for attention, coordination, and emotional regulation.

  • Stronger motor skills - Studies show that children who play outdoors regularly demonstrate better balance, core strength, and gross motor coordination than peers who spend most of their time indoors.

  • Reduced stress and improved mood - Time in green spaces lowers cortisol, supports calmer behavior, and increases resilience—especially important for children who struggle with transitions or sensory overwhelm.

  • Enhanced creativity and problem‑solving - Unstructured outdoor play encourages flexible thinking, experimentation, and self‑directed learning—skills that structured environments often limit.

Angela Hanscom, pediatric occupational therapist and author of Balance and Barefoot, recommends that young children spend 3–5 hours of outdoor play daily to support healthy sensory and motor development. She highlights that:

  • Children need big, whole‑body movement—running, spinning, climbing, rolling—to build the neurological foundations for focus and self‑control.

  • Risk-taking in nature (climbing logs, balancing on rocks, navigating uneven terrain) teaches children to assess danger, build confidence, and strengthen executive functioning.

  • Barefoot time and exposure to natural elements help children develop stronger sensory awareness and body intelligence.
